Spending a little more for your health
If you ask the average person if he wants to eat healthier foods, he will probably say, “yes.” However, if you ask him whether he would pay more for healthier options, he may not be so quick to say “yes.”
A study done by The NPD Group, which is a marketing research company based in New York, reported that most Americans are not willing to pay more for healthier meal choices when they dine in restaurants.
In the survey, only 9 percent of the respondents said that they would be willing to pay more. While saving money is not a bad thing to do, sacrificing good nutrition is not worth the few dollars saved from every meal.
Average Foods People Eat
Let’s take a look at the “average” types of food that busy folks eat these days. These foods might be purchased from a drive-thru window at a fast-food restaurant. These may be frozen meals that are ready to heat and eat. People like to choose these options because they are fast and cheap. And who would not want to save time and money?
The problem is that these foods are highly processed. They are usually full of preservatives and artificial ingredients. Producers of processed foods can offer them to consumers at a lower price because they use low quality ingredients and methods to produce the food. These foods are high in unhealthy fats, salt, and sugar. They are low in nutrients.
If you look at the label of a packaged food, you would not be able to pronounce half the ingredients because they are artificial and add no nutritional value. When you eat a regular diet of these, you are feeding your body with many harmful ingredients without the nutrients that it needs. Over time, your health will suffer from it.
Healthy Food Choices
In contrast, your healthy choices may contain organic options. However, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, organic food costs the consumer more because the cost to produce it is higher for the farmers.
Instead of using inexpensive chemicals and pesticides to boost food production, more money is spent on labor intensive methods. Organic farmers cannot take advantage of economies of scale. More money is spent, but the yield is less in comparison to traditional farming methods.

To a consumer like you, eating organically produced foods results in better health because the risk of getting harmed by food chemicals is minimized. Better health means less money and time spent going to the doctor’s office for health problems. It means a potentially higher quality of life. In the long run, being in better health will save you money because you will have less medical expenses.
So, when you spend more money in eating healthier foods today, think of it as investing in your future. Not only will you reduce your medical costs down the road, but you will increase your enjoyment in life. It makes good financial sense, and you will feel better for it.
